Instructions for Parish Leaders
The bishop nominating committee is seeking input from all members of the Episcopal Diocese of San Diego, as we plan to call our next bishop. Twelve (12) listening sessions have been scheduled throughout the diocese: please encourage parishioners to attend one in your area. The purpose of the listening sessions is to gather information to create our diocesan profile. The diocesan profile is the snapshot we will present to the world, and especially to those who are discerning if they are being called to be our bishop.
The nominating committee will also use an online survey to collect additional information prior to creating the profile. We want to provide all members of the diocese, and especially those who weren’t able to attend a listening session, with another method of letting us know who they are and what their dreams are. The survey tool we'll use is named Landscape; it is similar to the Congregational Assessment Tool (CAT) that several parishes in the diocese have used. The Landscape survey is meant to help us:
Our plan is to open access to the survey on Advent I (December 3) and close the survey on Epiphany (January 6). We hope this will be sufficient time during a very busy season to provide everyone an opportunity to respond.
We need your help in this process! We will provide you with an invitation to participate announcement and the link to the survey one week before December 3. We ask that you share that invitation and link with your congregation through your weekly newsletter and/or printed bulletin on December 3. On each successive week, we will send you a new announcement reminder to share with your congregations.
Prior to receiving the link to the survey, please ask your congregations to ensure that the church office has their current/correct email address. Each adult (16+) member of the household will be asked to complete the survey for her/himself, even if there is only one email address for all members of the family. Individual responses to the survey are key to our success.
For those without internet access, we ask that you provide these individuals with a paper copy of the survey (20 pages). Please encourage them to fully complete questions 60 and 61 which require them to prioritize several statements. All statements must receive a rating in order to be tabulated accurately. Once they complete the survey, they can return it to you. We ask that you return all completed paper surveys to the nominating committee by December 31. We also invite you to find creative ways to energize your congregants to participate in the survey. Perhaps that could be a Survey Sunday, where folks bring their laptops/notepads to church to take the survey and/or to help others without internet access to complete the survey. (Note: it will take around 25 minutes to complete the online survey.) Another idea might be to have parishioners add a star to the Christmas tree or manger scene when they complete the survey. Let your imagination loose in support of this part of the process for calling our new bishop.
